For our client, a significant precious and base metals producer based in Anglophone Africa, we are seeking a highly skilled Senior Geologist. This pivotal role is essential for the effective management of underground production geology at a large-scale, complex mining operation.
About the Role:
The Senior Geologist will be responsible for planning, supervising, and controlling all aspects of underground grade control for a significant polymetallic mine. This role is critical for minimising ore dilution, optimising production grade, and contributing to the accurate calculation of ore reserves and resources. The successful candidate will lead a team of geologists and technicians in a well-established, remote mine site environment.
Key Responsibilities:
- Plan and supervise all underground production geology activities, with a primary focus on grade control from active draw points.
- Develop and implement systematic sampling methods to accurately determine ore grade and minimise dilution.
- Closely monitor stope drawing and waste development to ensure economic cut-off grades are maintained.
- Contribute to the calculation and reporting of ore reserves and resources, including the accurate tracking of mine depletion.
- Manage and analyse production data, completing monthly stockpile reconciliations and reports for the management team.
- Lead, train, and mentor a team of geologists and technicians in underground mapping, sampling, and grade control techniques.
- Drive and uphold the highest standards of health, safety, and environmental compliance within the geology department.
Requirements:
- A university degree in Geology is essential.
- A minimum of 10 years of practical experience in mining geology.
- At least 5 years of dedicated experience in an underground, hard-rock mining environment, preferably with base metals.
- Expert proficiency with geological modelling and mine planning software (e.g., Deswik, Surpac).
- Strong technical knowledge of underground grade control, sampling techniques, QA/QC principles, and resource modelling.
- Proven leadership skills with the ability to train, mentor, and manage the performance of a technical team.
- Previous working experience in challenging ground conditions is highly advantageous.
- Must be physically and medically fit for a remote, site-based role.
