For our client based in West Africa, we are seeking a highly skilled Chief Geologist. This pivotal role is essential for leading the geology and exploration functions at a highly-regarded open pit mining operation.
About the Role:
The Chief Geologist will direct and manage the site-based Geology Team, ensuring the implementation of world-class standards across all geological activities. This includes overseeing resource modelling, grade control, geotechnical analysis, and exploration programs to support both short-term and long-term mine planning. This is a senior leadership position reporting directly to the Mine Manager on a 9/3 rotational roster.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead, manage, and mentor the Geology and Exploration team to achieve operational targets.
- Oversee the development and validation of open pit geological models, ensuring data accuracy for mine planning.
- Establish and manage robust grade control, geotechnical, and hydrological protocols.
- Direct all on-site drilling assets and exploration programs to define and expand mineral resources.
- Provide critical geological input for the creation of short-term, medium-term, and Life of Mine (LoM) plans.
- Prepare and manage the annual geology department budget, forecasts, and cost controls.
- Ensure all geological activities and reporting comply with regulatory requirements and company standards.
- Champion health, safety, and environmental best practices within the department to achieve Zero Harm.
Requirements:
- A Bachelor’s degree in Geology, Geological Engineering, or a related discipline.
- Extensive experience in open pit, iron ore mine geology, with a significant portion in a senior or leadership capacity.
- Proven expertise in resource modelling, reserve estimation, and geological database management.
- Strong proficiency with industry-standard mine planning and geology software packages.
- Demonstrated experience in the administration and management of complex drilling programs.
- A strong leader with the ability to mentor and develop a team of technical professionals.
- In-depth knowledge of international HSE standards and risk management processes in a mining environment.
- Excellent communication, reporting, and stakeholder management skills.
