Clerk of Works (Civil Structural & Earthworks)

For our client, a well-known Operation moving into development based in Southern Africa, we are seeking an experienced a Senior Clerk of Works (Earthworks, Civil & Structural). This is a critical site-based role for the construction and implementation of a major new refinery project.

About the Role:

The Clerk of Works will be responsible for the on-site inspection of workmanship, quality, and safety for all earthworks, civil, and structural construction activities. Reporting to the Civil Engineer, this role is crucial for ensuring that all work is executed by the appointed contractors in accordance with the project designs, specifications, and to the highest standards of quality and safety. This is a residential position based at the project site.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct on-site management and monitoring of all earthworks, civil, and structural contractor works to ensure compliance with designs and specifications.

  • Perform quality assurance and control checks on all building materials, including cement, steel, and aggregates.

  • Monitor construction progress against the project schedule, providing accurate and efficient weekly site progress reports.

  • Identify construction defects and liaise with engineering and contractor teams to ensure timely and effective rectification.

  • Champion and enforce the highest standards of health, safety, and environmental compliance across all construction sites.

  • Witness all required technical and quality tests as stipulated in the construction contracts.

  • Provide mentorship and technical guidance to appointed local small-works contractors to develop local capability.

Requirements:

  • A qualification in Civil Engineering or extensive, verifiable experience in a similar role.

  • A minimum of 10 years of relevant post-qualification experience.

  • At least 4 years of experience in a project/construction environment on a complex mining project is essential.

  • Proven expertise in QA/QC, progress measurement, and compiling Bills of Quantities (BOQ).

  • Strong technical knowledge of earthworks, concrete works, piling, structural steel, and the installation of buried underground utilities.

  • The ability to interpret complex engineering drawings and technical specifications.

  • Professional proficiency in English is required.
